Horizontal leadership is a pedagogical idea that establishes a collaborative structure in a dynamic rehearsal process. Building a progressive and synergetic relationship between me and the dancers during the creative process means that the communal space in which we created a bond, felt safe to vocalize adaptations, concerns and disagreements in a professional and conducive manner drove the creation and productivity.

I describe emergent world building as designing the space. There is little to no pre-planning; allowing the world to emerge means no preconceived notions about where the dance is set, what it is about, or what I want the audience to take away from the performance. World building isn’t about the gestured movement that is happening in the space but how the bodies relate to the space. I explore the complexity of world building through relational movement interactions, revealing emergent spatial contexts, meanings, and connections.
